What is Dare2Dialogue?
People don’t talk to each other anymore. We live in a world of sound bites and opinions. People don’t sit down and discuss things in depth anymore. What if there was a place to dig deeper into the issues we face today? At the Saint John Leadership Institute, we are offering that opportunity. So, we invite you to attend this dialogue if you dare!
Our topic this month is:
Social Emotional Learning: what is it and what does a Catholic parent or teacher need to know?
Where: The Arena Conference Room | The Saint John Institute
4775 S Pearl St, Englewood, CO 80113
*Please enter on the west entrance, near the Roost (outdoor deck)
When: 7:00pm – 9:00pm (MST)
*Please arrive no later than 6:55pm as this event will be recorded
What: We all know that the parents are the primary educators of their children, but that doesn’t mean that every parent is able to deliver classroom-style learning. We rely on good teachers in both public and private schools. However, we do live in a world with many outside influences on our children that make it difficult to navigate the emotions evoked from society today. Both teachers and parents struggle at times to contend with these emotions.
“Social Emotional Learning” (SEL) is a concept created to respond to the need for our children to deal with bullying and anger. Unfortunately, the values held dear by the Catholic and broader Christian community are being overlooked. So what are we to do?
Our panel will focus on the use of SEL in classrooms in Colorado. Dr. Angela Wall, a Clinical and School Psychologist at St. Raphael Counseling (SRC), will present the perspective of the Catholic Church and the Catholic version of virtue-based SEL that SRC is developing and how their counselors incorporate it in Catholic schools. Lori Gimelshteyn, Executive Director of the Colorado Parent Advocacy Network (CPAN), will examine the benefits and challenges of SEL in today’s public schools and provide valuable insights into empowering parents with resources and information to nurture their children’s emotional development.
This in-person presentation will benefit parents, grandparents, and teachers/school staff members. We have only 30 seats available for this live panel. There will be audience Q&A and a light reception following the panel discussion.
Patty McKernan will moderate this discussion. Each panelist will share their perspective/story, then there will be 20 minutes of dialogue between the panelists and moderator, 30 minutes for audience Q&A, and 30 minutes of fellowship and refreshments at the end.
