SUMMARY:March 2025 Dare2Dialogue™
DESCRIPTION:What is Dare2Dialogue? People don’t talk to each other anymore.  We live in a world of sound bites and opinions.  People don’t sit down and discuss things in depth anymore. What if there was a place to dig deeper into the issues we face today?  At the Saint John Leadership Institute\, we are offering that opportunity.  So\, we invite you to attend this dialogue if you dare! \nOur topic this month is:\nSocial Emotional Learning: What is it and what does a Catholic parent or teacher need to know? \nWhere: The Arena Conference Room | The Saint John Institute\n4775 S Pearl St\, Englewood\, CO 80113\n*Please enter on the west entrance\, near the Roost (outdoor deck) \nWhen: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm (MST)\n*Please arrive no later than 6:55 pm as this event will be recorded \nWhat: We all know that parents are the primary educators of their children\, but that doesn’t mean that every parent is able to deliver classroom-style learning.  We rely on good teachers in both public and private schools.  However\, we do live in a world with many outside influences on our children that make it difficult to navigate the emotions evoked from society today.  Both teachers and parents struggle at times to contend with these emotions. \n“Social Emotional Learning” (SEL) is a concept created to respond to the need for our children to deal with bullying and anger. Unfortunately\, the values held dear by the Catholic and broader Christian community are being overlooked. So what are we to do? \nOur panel will focus on the use of SEL in classrooms in Colorado. Dr. Angela Wall\, a Clinical and School Psychologist at St. Raphael Counseling (SRC)\, will present the perspective of the Catholic Church and the Catholic version of virtue-based SEL that SRC is developing and how their counselors incorporate it in Catholic schools. Lori Gimelshteyn\, Executive Director of the Colorado Parent Advocacy Network (CPAN)\, will examine the benefits and challenges of SEL in today’s public schools and provide valuable insights into empowering parents with resources and information to nurture their children’s emotional development. \nThis in-person presentation will benefit parents\, grandparents\, and teachers/school staff members. We have only 30 seats available for this live panel. There will be audience Q&A and a light reception following the panel discussion. \nPatty McKernan will moderate this discussion. Each panelist will share their perspective/story\, then there will be 20 minutes of dialogue between the panelists and moderator\, 30 minutes for audience Q&A\, and 30 minutes of fellowship and refreshments at the end. \nAre you interested in becoming a panelist at a future Dare2Dialogue™? Reach out to Patty Mckernan\, at patty.mckernan@saintjohninstitute.org. \nBrought to you by the Saint John Leadership Institute. 4775 S. Pearl Street\, Englewood CO

SUMMARY:May 2025 Dare2Dialogue™
DESCRIPTION:**Exciting Change in Plans* Join us May 29\, 2025 at 7pm for Dare2Dialogue: a forum for deep discussion on serious issues.   \nRegistration closes May 27. \nWhat is Dare2Dialogue?\n\nPeople don’t talk to each other anymore. \nWith the announcement of our new Holy Father\, we decided to change the topic for May.  It is also Ascension Thursday\, so for those who were hoping to attend an evening Mass\, we will celebrate Mass at 5:30 in our chapel. \nOur topic this month is: Habemus Papam Americanus! What does this mean for a US Catholic? \nOn the 10th Anniversary of the Saint John Institute we witnessed the election of the first American-born pope.  The media has been abuzz.  Our friends\, colleagues\, and family–Catholic or not–have been sharing questions\, social posts\, and news articles about this new pope.  What does all of that mean?  We are going to have a lively discussion with Nathan Crankfield of Seeking Excellence podcast and Hallow\,   and Andre Escaleira\, managing  editor of The Denver Catholic magazine\, to discuss this topic.  And even better\, Father Nathan will be in town to add to the discussion. \nPatty McKernan will moderate this discussion. Each panelist will share their perspective/story\, then there will be 20 minutes of dialogue between the panelists and moderator\, 30 minutes for audience Q&A\, and 30 minutes of fellowship and refreshments at the end.   Read our panelist’s bios here

SUMMARY:2025 Alaska Young Adult Eagle Eye Summer Institute
DESCRIPTION:Join the Brothers and Sisters of St. John and other Catholic young adults ages 20 – 33\, July 3 – 13\, and discover God in the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. Experience the rhythm of the liturgical observances of the Community of St. John. Early in this program\, we will be hiking the 24-mile Crow Pass Trail\, well known in Alaska as part of the historic Iditarod trail. For the 4 days of our backcountry adventure\, immersed in God’s creation\, we will forge new friendships while we brave the challenges of crossing the glacial waters of Eagle River. Following our hike\, as part of our daily rhythm at the retreat center near Anchorage\, we will continue theology and philosophy\, with views of the Chugach Mountains rising up on the fringes of the city. While we explore this year’s theme\, “Our Hope Does Not Disappoint: God is the Rock Who Anchors Our Soul”\, expect days that are dynamic and thought-provoking affording you a chance to discern your place as a young adult in the church as well as to search for truth and why it is important. \nPlease be aware that the hiking we will partake in consists of highly strenuous routes\, such as crossing boulder fields. At times\, we will hike without marked trails (backcountry) and on uneven terrain with steep elevation gains for several hours. Additionally\, while hiking\, participants must be able to carry a backpack weighing about 40 pounds\, filled with personal and group gear. At different points during the hike\, the weather conditions can range from 80 degrees and sunny to 30 degrees and sleet. There is no cell phone service. The camp sites have no facilities. You must be in shape and fit enough to walk steeply uphill\, continuously for 3 miles\, carrying your 40-pound backpack. A good attitude is required. \nParticipants can expect to share a bedroom with another person and to use shared bathrooms. Meals will be provided. \nIf you have any questions\, please email eagleeyealaska@gmail.com

SUMMARY:July 2025 Dare2Dialogue™
DESCRIPTION:People don’t talk to each other anymore. \nOur topic this month is: Grandparents:  Can we make an impact on our grandchildren’s faith and the culture they live in? \nFather Nathan often talks about the role of the grandparent in the lives of our grandchildren\, but since he isn’t one\, let’s dive in and talk to grandparents and how we approach this ever-so-important topic.  Our panelists will be Lynn Grandon\, an extraordinary grandmother (you will hear why) and example of faith in action; and Steve McKenna\, a lawyer and board member of Grandparents4Kids\, who will share a very reasoned approach for how grandparents can impact the lives of their grandchildren and other grandchildren. You don’t have to be a grandparent to attend! But please share this with those you think would be blessed by this discussion. \nWhat to Expect: \n\nLively discussion with expert panelists\, including Lynn Grandon and Steve McKenna (bios coming soon)\nInsightful perspectives on the impact grandparents can make on society which also influences faith\nAudience Q&A and fellowship to share your thoughts\, questions\, and insights.\nWine & Cheese & Chocolate reception following the discussion ($10 cover charge)\n\nBrought to you by the Saint John Leadership Institute. \nWhere: The Arena Conference Room | The Saint John Institute\n4775 S Pearl St\, Englewood\, CO 80113\n*Please enter on the west entrance\, near the Roost (outdoor deck) \nPanel begins at 7:00 pm \n*Please arrive no later than 6:55 pm\, as this event will be recorded \nAre you interested in becoming a panelist at a future Dare2Dialogue™?
